i notice the tips on early retirement on the right column of your blog. do you agree with the author that it is more ideal to rent than to buy a home in singapore, considering that it is possible to have a monthly installment on a HDB flat that is cheaper than monthly rental?

Whether you should rent your flat or buy a flat depends on various factors i guess. In SG and some asian countries , we do have a 3rd option to still stay with our parents.

No matter who you are , cash flow is important (where cash flow = cash in - cash out

for sg's case , as the down payment can be significant , if you do not have that lump sum available , then rent is an option. As committing when your cash flow is weak would live you with little options.

if you have dependents like a wife and a kid , living with parents can be inconvenient too. For non economical reason of convenience and comfort getting a flat is the preferred option.

During a market upturn , maybe it is good to steer clear of buying when the prices are high. Renting would prevail

On the flip side , during a downturn , maybe it would be cheaper to buy a home when prices are high.

I think the author's context is not in Singapore , so for our idiosyncratic requirements , the options chosen is circumstantial.

cool... sounds reasonable... except that during market upturn, rents go up too. we'll probably need to rent a room in some factory at tuas, going by today's inflation rate.

at least when you buy the flat, no matter the installments you pay, it still belongs to you (until URA plans an expressway over your kitchen).

ya if possible, stay with parents.

but forget about that if you're married. it is your one way ticket to zero sex life.

yea haha

anyway you do not own the hdb flat , you just have the rights to use it for 99 years , unless its a freehold.
